  93. ABOUT THE AUTHOR

To Natasha Ngan, who is one of my favorite authors—and my first ever blurb. When I saw your email, I nearly passed out. Thank you, thank you, thank you. I will simply never recover. A massive thank you as well to Chloe Gong, Adrienne Tooley, Francesca May, Adalyn Grace, and Hannah Whitten for reading and for the lovely blurbs. I am so grateful to you all.

To my friends and family who loved this book in its messiest, ugliest form—Meagan Cotter, Natalie Noland, Sabrina Cotrell, Mara Bouvier-Schatz, Sarah Sprenger, Uncle Dusty & Aunt Diane—I can’t believe you guys read this, let alone liked it, but your hope for this book when it was a sad, confusing mess carried me through endless revisions. Grandma, I wish you could have read this. It’s nothing like the romance novels you loved, but you would have pretended to like it anyway. I miss you every day. Grandpa, I love you. Please do not read this. Mom, Dad, Hannah, I love you guys, thank you for letting me steal the family computer to spend all my time writing on Neopets instead of making friends like a normal kid should have. It paid off—I think.

Kristen Remenar is the reason I write and read fantasy. I was a reluctant reader when I wandered into her library, and it was through her recommendation I fell in love with magic (and… violence…?) through worlds built by Brian Jacques, Tamora Pierce, Suzanne Collins, and so many more. I blame you, Kristen, for all of this. I harbor the belief that all librarians are superheroes—but you are the Extra Super kind.

Vicky Stringer wasn’t the first teacher to say I could write books, but she was the first that gave me the space and the time to do so. I don’t know if my first (awful) book would have ever been written had she not somehow convinced my high school that letting a seventeen-year-old sit in the library every day and write was something that could count towards graduating… but she did, and that first, awful book led to many more slightly less awful books. Stringy, I wouldn’t be an author without you; and I’m forever grateful to you. Thank you also to Jenna Bendle, Mary Moon, Jeff Chapman, and so many other wonderful teachers. I know you saw me secretly reading under the desk in class. Thank you for pretending not to notice anyway.

Kirsten Elliott and Tressa Mucci told their dorky, fresh-out-of-college coworker that yes, she could be an author and no, it was okay to go find a career that involved a little less math. You were right on both counts. I love you both dearly.
