  93. ABOUT THE AUTHOR

“I’m not going to destroy the vaccine, Ranka,” said Nadya. “You are.”

Ranka flinched involuntarily. Had Nadya lost her mind? Beside her, Aramis made a strangled noise of panic. But the Skra looked calm—as if they had expected this and knew how it would play out.

There would be no reasoning with them.

Now a question waited before Ranka, gleaming in the curve of the axe’s blade.

Despair closed white-hot claws around her heart. None of this was right. The Skra and the twins were on the same side. If she could just talk to Ongrum—just make her see—

Except Ongrum wasn’t coming.

If she were hurt, Ranka would have felt it. Would have known. It was she Ranka followed. It was her vision for the coven Ranka fought for. Not Nadya’s or anyone else’s.

Which meant anyone standing against Ongrum while she still breathed was not Skra, but a traitor. And Ranka had long been trained that the Skra didn’t believe in mercy when it came to those who betrayed their own.

Her vision narrowed.

Without her blood-magic, she would have to be precise, and fatal. She liked Nadya, truly, but what was a few witches, for the safety of her coven? Right now the vaccine was paramount. Without it, the covens were doomed. Ongrum would be aligned with her once Ranka found her. She might even be proud.

One swing to the throat. That’s all it would take. Even without blood-magic, Ranka might be able to take the other two witches with the element of surprise on her side. Nadya was the only real threat. With her dead, Aramis would be safe. They would reconvene with Ongrum later and clean up the mess the rebel Skra had made.

She’d save the cure. Save Aramis. Find Ongrum, explain what had happened, and salvage what was left.

She could still do this—save nearly everyone, with a few painful casualties along the way.

Ranka took the weapon.

The axe yanked her arm down.

This was the right move. The right choice. The cure and the twins. The future of witches over the temporary dreams of her coven. The twins were their best chance. They were her new path, her new mission.

They were the family she chose.

And the Skra… they would see, someday, she’d done this for them. Even if they hated her for it.

Ranka raised her hand.

And Ongrum stepped through the door.
