  50. EPILOGUE

Amy moved fast and grabbed as many towels as she could find, first by exhausting the supply in the room, then raiding the hotel’s laundry cupboard down the hall. She got down on her hands and knees and soaked up the water as best she could. Thankfully, it lifted from the tiles and hardwood floors with relative ease, leaving behind only a mild dampness that she hoped would dry by morning.

When she was done, Amy stowed her dad’s pill container back in his duffel, closed the door, switched off the lights, and climbed back into bed. Still drowsy from the drugs, she yawned deeply and fell asleep with no trouble at all, not stirring even once. She was so tired that she completely forgot about the intruder, nor did she think to question the whereabouts of her dad, who still hadn’t returned. And she certainly didn’t notice the light emanating from outside, a golden beam that cut through the night sky and was pointed at the first floor of the hotel . . . straight at her bedroom window.

Kevin’s mind was stuck on Amy. He had just seen her return to the hotel and rush up the stairs, but from the way she had kept her arms folded and head down, it seemed that she might have been upset, and that left him feeling unsure about what he should do next.

His instinct was to give chase, but there was a voice in his head telling him to refrain. After all, the last thing Amy would want was him knocking on the door checking if she was all right, smothering her with questions. And the last thing he wanted was for yet another one of their conversations to end in an argument. This trip was supposed to give them a change of scenery, a chance to reconnect, and while he’d been skeptical of Jack’s idea at first, they were here now and he was determined to give it his best shot. If that meant staying put and giving Amy some space, then that’s what he would try to do. He only wished it wasn’t so damn hard.

Hoping to take his mind off things, Kevin pulled out his phone and once again reached out to his brother.

“Hey buddy,” Jack answered. “How’s everything going down there?”

“Hard to say right now. Amy was quiet on the drive down. I’m trying to let her be, which seems counterintuitive to this great plan of yours.”

“Keep your chin up. You two are going to be fine.”

“Yeah, we’ll see. Ask me again in twenty-four hours.”

“Still, must feel better to be getting out of that house for a bit, don’t you think?”

“What’s that supposed to mean?”

“Nothing. Just that there are probably lots of reminders of Helen.”

“And?”
