  50. EPILOGUE

The speed of the drop forced his heart up into his throat. Ryan closed his eyes, tried to brace himself, but the impact of hitting the water from two hundred feet sucked the wind right out of him. He plunged into the ocean so deep and so fast that he never had a hope of making it back up to the surface. Seawater poured in a torrent into his mouth and straight down his throat, quickly plugging his windpipe and spilling into his lungs. An enormous pressure built inside his chest, an immense force unlike anything he’d ever known, and in his head he heard himself cry out for help, a desperate plea that no one would hear.

Dad . . .

And then there was silence, and all was perfectly still.

Amy strained in agony. Both her arms felt like they were getting pulled out of their sockets. She was perched halfway over the edge of the cliff, her grip on Ryan loosening by the second.

“Hold on to me!” she yelled.

“You can’t do this, Amy! You have to let go!”

“What ?”

Ryan looked down at the ocean, then back at her.

“If you don’t let go, you’ll fall too . . .”

“Forget it!”

As the rain thundered down and as Ryan slipped even more, Amy noticed the specks of light on her skin were multiplying, rapidly turning into a burning glow that was traveling up her arms and spreading across her body. The emptiness she had felt returned with a vengeance, signaling that her time was fast coming to an end. She was acutely aware what would happen if Ryan fell; she would be banished from this place and Ryan would remain, returned to the beginning of his loop, condemned to this prison without any possibility of escape. If she let him go then his fate would be sealed, but Amy refused to accept that there was nothing she could do. Even if her time was up and all her chances had been spent, she wasn’t letting go without a fight.

“Amy, listen to me! There’s no way you can pull me back up, and there’s no way I’m taking you with me.” Ryan then used his other hand to pry away Amy’s grip, which caused him to drop farther. “You have to let me go!”

“No!” Amy screamed, and she reattached her hand to his arm, but not before he had slipped down even more.

“Don’t do this!” he yelled.

Amy shook her head in defiance, tears spilling from her eyes, her skin almost translucent as she fought to hold on, fought to stay in Ryan’s world. Her pendant hung low from her neck, and when Amy caught a glimpse of it swirling in the blustery wind, her mind was jolted back to what her mother had said in the lighthouse.

You have more control in here than you think.
