  50. EPILOGUE

Amy couldn’t take it a second longer. She was so confused and upset she was about to cry. She turned her face to the rain-striped glass and gave Ryan one last look, her voice breaking as she gave the cabbie her order.

“Can we go? Now, please.”

“But is everything all right, miss? He sure does seem upset about something?”

“Please. Just drive.”

Amy could think of nothing else as the cab wound its way back down the narrow country roads. All she wanted to know was why ? Why did Ryan take her pendant from her room? Why hide it from her? Why play dumb and pretend he’d never seen it before? Was that really the sort of person he was? Just some opportunistic petty thief? Granted, they hadn’t known each other long, but the last thing she would have pegged him for would be a liar and a crook. It didn’t make any sense. None whatsoever. Much like everything else going on in this damn town.

“Miss, you sure you’re okay?”

Amy didn’t answer. She turned inward to the door, away from the driver, and pulled out her phone. She needed to speak to her dad. She needed to make sure he was back from wherever he’d been. She desperately needed to hear a voice she could trust.

The moment the car emerged from the valley and joined the main road, Amy hit the green button and held the phone to her ear. She caught the driver’s eyes lingering on her in the rearview mirror as she waited impatiently for the call to connect.

“Come on,” she muttered under her breath, “please go through, please go through.”

The number you have dialed is not in service. Please check the number and try again. The number you have dialed is not in service. Please—

Amy ripped the phone from her ear and glared at the screen. She assumed she had messed something up, but the signal bars were at full strength and the number she had called was most definitely her dad’s. She hit the call button and tried again, but again she was thwarted by the same robotic voice crackling in her ears.

The number you have dialed is not in service. Please—

Amy terminated the call and swiped through her contacts, hurriedly searching for her uncle’s number. He was the reason they were here. He was the one who had sent her dad down to Seabrook. If anyone knew what was going on, it would be Uncle Jack. But her attempts to reach him were met with the same response.

The number you have dialed is not in service.

“What the hell . . .”
