  50. EPILOGUE

Amy didn’t need to turn around to know she wasn’t alone. A group of people had somehow infiltrated the room. She could see them in the reflection of the glass. They were standing by the door. Half a dozen of them, each focused on her with that same empty, ominous glare.

“Leave . . .” one of them said.

Another pointed a finger.

“Leave . . .”

They began moving in her direction. It took every ounce of control Amy had not to scream. She made a desperate lunge for the window, grabbed the handle, and pulled hard on it, but the lock had jammed and wouldn’t budge. In a panic, she even tried smashing the pane with her elbow, but the glass wouldn’t break. As the intruders were approaching, as Amy watched them in the reflection, converging on her, only a few feet away, the beam from the lighthouse swung in her direction and flooded the room with light. The intruders stumbled backward, shielding their eyes. Then Amy heard the window slide back open, and she felt a small hand tug on her arm.

“Saving your butt three times in one night. You owe me!”

“Oh my God, Chloe. Get me out of here! ”

“Come on, let’s go!”

Amy climbed out the window and followed Chloe along the fire escape. They leapt down the stairs several steps at a time. When they reached the sidewalk, Chloe yanked Amy’s arm and pulled her into the middle of the street. Rain swirled around them, the wind roaring in their ears.

“Where’s the car?” Chloe yelled.

Amy fumbled for the keys and pressed down; from out of the darkness, a hundred yards away, a pair of orange lights blinked back at them.

“There it is! Come with me, Chloe!”

“No, I can’t. It’s up to you now.”

“Come, please!” Amy tugged on Chloe’s arm, but Chloe stepped away and shook her head.

“I can’t, Amy! This place is falling apart. I need to find somewhere to hide. You’re the only one who can help my brother!”

Behind them, the crowd began spilling out of the hotel. They had spotted Chloe and Amy and were charging toward them, blocking the path to the car. Chloe gave Amy a hard shove.

“You’re on your own, Amy!” she cried out. “Go find him! You can do it! I believe in you!” Without any warning, Chloe threw her hands in the air, hollered at the crowd, then began running in the opposite direction. “Just get in the car and start driving!” she yelled, her voice fading into the distance. “Go!”
