“Nothing. I told her I didn’t remember, and she laughed at me like it was the funniest thing she’d ever heard, then we got on with the lesson.” Ryan buried his eyes back into the book, staring as though the answer might somehow be lurking inside. “Something’s going on with her, Amy. I don’t know what it is, but there’s something.”
Not knowing what else to say, Amy looked down at the book too, and as she studied the cover once more, she noticed something unusual.
“Hey, what’s that?” she asked, pointing at a small bulge near the spine. “There’s something stuck inside the book.”
“Yeah, you’re right.” Holding the book in the air, Ryan opened the covers and gave it a good shake. Something small and silvery dropped to the floor.
Amy bent down and searched the ground beside Ryan’s feet. When she saw what it was, her heart nearly stopped. It was a pendant—a mermaid perched on a rock, her tail wrapped around a moonstone. At first Amy thought it was just a bizarre coincidence, but when she picked up the pendant and examined it more closely, she quickly realized that every mark, every scratch, every tiny imperfection—from the scuff marks on the tail, right down to the discolored specks on the moonstone—were identical to hers. Even the chain was the same. Everything was the same.
No, thought Amy, it can’t be possible.
She turned to face him.
“Why do you have this?”
“Why do I have what?” Ryan reached out his hand. “Can I see it?”
Amy gave the pendant to him and watched him closely, following his expression as he turned it over in his hands.
“I have no idea where this came from.”
Amy snatched it back, securing it tightly inside her fist. “You’re not playing games with me, are you?”
“Games? What?”
“Don’t tease me. Is this some kind of joke?”
“A joke? Amy, what are you talking about?” Ryan tried to reach out and touch her leg, but she shifted away. “Whoa, what’s going on?”
“You tell me.”
“What?”
“Tell me the truth, Ryan.”
“The truth about what ?”
“About why you have this pendant. This is the pendant my mom gave me.”
He frowned hard. “But how can that be?” Again, he tried to move closer, but Amy continued her slide down the couch. “Amy, listen to me, you’re not making any sense.”
“You’re seriously telling me that you don’t know how you got this?”
“Yes, that’s what I’m telling you.”
“You don’t know how something of mine ended up here in your attic?”
“No, Amy, I don’t. That’s the honest truth.”
“Wait, did you take this from my room?”
“What?”
