“They must’ve found the right angle to avoid the cameras and waited for the guards’ shift to end before they advanced.” We’d made sure not to have set schedules, but if someone had been watching us, they might’ve been able to find the right time. I just wasn’t sure how no one had seen them coming into our area—if it were indeed the Desaltis. I didn’t even want to think what might happen if it were someone else. The Desaltis were enough. I really didn’t need another enemy.
“I knew there had been something up there!” Felipe said after he stormed into the room.
“What are you talking about?” I asked.
“We detected something in the sky a short while ago,” Meg said. “Felipe thought it was a drone, but when he got here, we couldn’t find it anymore, so we thought it had been a glitch.”
“So it’s possible they took photos of this area and our house and knew when the guards would move?”
“Yeah, I think so,” Meg said. “Wait, I found that guy.”
“Who is he?”
“Um, he... He’s an assassin.”
“An assassin?” I really hoped my men were holding up against our attackers and would be able to defeat them. There couldn’t be that many of those assassins, because we would’ve spotted them, and it wasn’t exactly easy to hire a bunch of them and get them to work together.
“Yeah, and a good one,” Meg said. “He’s been avoiding the cops for years, and he killed a powerful gang leader and no one ever found him to retaliate for that.”
“We’re safe here, right? The elevators and emergency stairs are locked down.” At least I thought they should be. The only people who could override that code were Meg, Felipe, and me, and it wasn’t easy to get in here since we were underground, so there weren’t any windows to slip through, and the vents had a special system and weren’t big enough to fit a person.
“Yeah, we should be.”
“Don’t you think it’s a little weird for the Desaltis to hire assassins to attack us?” Felipe asked. “If this is retaliation for our attack on their stash house, then why not go for one of ours?”
“Maybe they want to show us that they can get to us easily.”
“Well, yeah, but if the only thing they do is kill a few of our men, how is that going to prove that they...?” Felipe said as an explosion rocked the floor.
“What the hell was that?” Meg yelped. “Oh, my God. They’re bombing the elevator!”
