“I’m right here. We just got rid of the assassin who came after us, but we don’t know if more might be coming. Are you okay? Is everyone...?” Well, probably not everyone, but I hoped at least someone was safe and well.

“Yeah, they’re gone. We got some of them, but two or three escaped. They used some kind of a drug and gas to incapacitate the guards,” she said. “But we’re securing the place again and... it’ll be fine. What about you?”

I breathed a sigh of relief. “Those guys will still be after me, and Romeo might send his men too. I’ll be in hiding somewhere until...”

“Wait, what do you mean? You need to come back here. This is still the safest place. You can’t be on your own. They’ll come for you and you won’t be able to...”

“Meg, listen to me. I’ll figure something out and it’s going to be okay. I’ll call you as soon as I can. I’ll get rid of this car and phone because I don’t want anyone to track me down.”

“Alright,” she said. “We’ll be waiting. But please be careful.”

“You too.” I ended the call. At least the assassins had left and now my men would be ready for them if they decided to return, although I doubted they’d do that since I wasn’t about to go back there until the Desaltis had been dealt with.

Chapter 24

JAMES AND I HAD SPENT the rest of the day trying to find a place where we could hide. We couldn’t be sure if our enemy knew where my hideouts were, but I assumed they’d first look for me there. I had to do something they wouldn’t expect, like finding a cheap motel.

Our main problem was getting around the city without being spotted by spies or the Desaltis’ men, and we didn’t even know if the assassins were still looking for us or if they’d been called off. They were probably still out there, and we had no idea what they looked like, so we had to be very careful. We didn’t talk much and picked busy streets that didn’t have any visible cameras. This still didn’t mean someone wasn’t watching us.
