Sure, I wanted to tear his clothes off and kiss him until our lips were sore, but I didn’t know if that was a good idea. Maybe he and I were a little different from most mafia families in this city, but getting truly attached to someone could bring a lot of heartbreak. Then again, what exactly were we living for if not for the brief moments of happiness that we got?
“You okay?” James asked, taking hold of my hand and inspecting my wrist, his fingers gently tracing over my skin and lighting the fire inside me. God, why was just one touch or even one look enough to make me tingle all over?
I nodded. “It’s nothing. I don’t think I sprained anything.”
He was about to say something when an alarm pierced the air, and my shoulders stiffened, my pulse speeding up. Were we under attack or had someone accidentally triggered the alarm? I eyed James as I waited for the alarm to go quiet, but it didn’t.
“Do you think it’s the Desaltis?” James asked, and we both rushed for the door.
I grabbed my gun that I’d left on a chair near the door. “I don’t know. But how the hell would they get in here without anyone seeing them from a mile away?”
“Are you sure this isn’t just an alert so we’d prepare for an attack?”
“Yeah, I know that sound.” It definitely wasn’t the alarm that we used when we wanted to quickly gather our men. No, this was something else. If the Desaltis had found their way inside, then I didn’t even want to think about what could happen. “We have to get to Meg.”
We raced down the hallway and burst through the door of the tech room. Meg looked up at us with wide eyes, her face pale.
“Someone’s in the house!” she said, her voice full of panic. “If they get in here...”
I came to stand behind her so I could see the camera feeds, but they were all black.
“Almost all of our cameras are down,” she said. “I can’t see what’s going on.”
“Do you know who attacked us? How did they even get in here?”
“I’m not sure. Before they destroyed the cameras, I only saw men in black. I don’t know how they could’ve snuck up on the house. I’m checking a photo of one of them who looked up at the camera before smashing it.”
