“Back off. What the hell is wrong with you? And why don’t you tell me who the mole was and what happened?” I wanted to push him toward the door so we could find someplace else to talk, but Brent caught my arms roughly and shoved me aside.

As I stumbled back, he advanced on James while reaching for his gun. But James was quicker, and he lunged at Brent, catching him in the jaw with his fist. Brent collided with the table, sending figures flying, but James held him by the shirt in a strong grip. James’ hand closed over the gun in Brent’s holster before Brent could reach it. James pointed it at Brent’s head as he let go of Brent’s shirt.

“Hands up,” James said, and Brent ground his teeth, then did as told.

“Are you going to let him shoot me now?” Brent asked.

“Why don’t you take a deep breath and tell me what happened with the mole?” It might have been someone close to Brent, so that was why he was behaving this way.

“While he’s still pointing the gun at me?” Brent nodded toward James, who held the gun steady.

“Yeah. Now talk.” I crossed my arms.

“After talking to you, I was going to get myself a drink, and the guy came up to me and started asking about the Desaltis and said it’s cool we defeated them. Then he said we should hit them harder next time and he tried to get the information about that drug out of me. I grabbed him by the shirt and ordered him to tell me who he was really working for. It occurred to me that he was just a guard here and that he wasn’t supposed to even know about things like that. He first pretended that he didn’t know anything, and I was about to bring him to you, but then he pulled out his gun. We wrestled for it and it fired. The bullet got him in the neck and there was nothing I could do about it.” Brent lowered his gaze.

“Wasn’t anyone there to help you out?” I asked.

He shook his head. “By the time I realized he was the traitor we were looking for, we were already near the elevators and no one was there. Can you tell him to put the gun down now?”

“James.” I extended my arm toward him.

He eyed me for a moment, then handed the gun to me. Brent let out a sigh of relief.

“So who was the mole? We need to search his room and find out everything about him. I need to know how he communicated with the Desaltis and how he found out what we were planning.” I held the gun in my hand and glanced down at it.

“I already sent men to do that before I got here,” he said. “It was Chris.”
