“I can try.” I gripped the steering wheel as tightly as possible, as if that was somehow going to help. We were just on the outskirts of the city, so there wasn’t much traffic here, but once we got onto a busy street, I wasn’t sure how we’d do this. The assassin was clearly intent on gunning us down, and I didn’t know if he’d give up if there were people around. Probably not. And then, even if we managed to escape, the cops would be all over us.

James pushed himself up so that his upper body was hanging out the window as he aimed at the assassin.

“James!” I yelled, my blood racing. Keeping my eyes on the road was a bit difficult when I couldn’t stop glancing at him to make sure he wouldn’t fall out. In the rearview mirror, I could see the assassin, who was right behind us, just out of James’ reach. Another bullet embedded itself somewhere and it sounded very close to the tires. The assassin had better not hit our tires, or we’d end up in a ditch somewhere, and with James trying to get a shot...

I headed toward the city and hoped I’d made the right call. Driving through the mostly empty roads wouldn’t do us any good if the attacker remained behind us. At least I could try to lose him in the traffic. It was possible we’d get slowed down too, but maybe then James would have a clear shot, or someone would collide with the attacker. It was better if he had to worry about more than just us. As for the cops and traffic cameras, I hoped they wouldn’t cause us any trouble. Once we got rid of the assassin, we’d have to ditch the car anyway.

“Just get inside!” I said as we practically flew down the street, and a few people stared at us while others ran for cover as soon as they saw the guns.

James had to duck inside because the assassin had moved to his side of the car and was aiming at him, but he didn’t fire. “I think he doesn’t have many bullets left, so he’s saving them and won’t shoot unless he has a clear shot.”

“Okay. That’s good. I guess.” I swerved into an alley that connected with another street. “So all I have to do is make sure he doesn’t get it.”

James grabbed another one of his guns. “I might have a plan.”

“Is it dangerous?” I asked.

He gave me a deadpan look. “No, it’s perfectly safe.”
