“That door,” I said, nodding toward the green door that led to the garage. We burst through it a few moments later, and while James was making sure no one was hiding in there so they could jump us, I headed for the board with keys. I’d never been so relieved to have all the keys in one place. Snatching the first one of them, I pressed the unlock button on it and one of the cars beeped, its headlights blinking.
We ran for it, and I got into the driver’s seat while James settled in the passenger one. I stuck the key in the ignition and turned. When the engine came to life, the door we’d used to get here opened, and a man with a gun raced toward us. As I backed out of the parking spot, James opened the window and aimed his gun through it at the assassin, who had to throw himself behind one of the cars to avoid getting hit.
I stepped on the gas, pressing the button to open the garage. Since the door was opening too slowly, it scraped lightly against the roof of the car. Someone was running after us, though, and he was going for the motorbike that I assumed belonged to one of my guards. He hopped onto it, and I cursed under my breath.
“Can you get him?” I asked. One of my guards must’ve arrived just as we’d been attacked, so he’d left his bike and the key behind and gone to help the others.
I sped toward the gates, which were now closed, because my guards weren’t there to open them. Shit. James tried to aim at the assassin, but he probably couldn’t get a clear shot, because he uttered a curse and didn’t fire.
“Hold on,” I said as we were headed straight for the gates. “I hope we can get through those.” We didn’t have reinforced gates, because we thought that would attract too much attention in this area, especially since all the neighbors had fancy ones. Our property was large, though, so it wasn’t as if we even saw our neighbors, and there was a wall surrounding us, which clearly hadn’t been enough to stop our attackers.
There was a loud crashing sound as we collided with the gates, but the car only lurched forward, sending the gates flying to the side. There were huge dents on the front of the car, but I didn’t care as long as I could keep driving it. The assassin was still behind us, and he was dodging James’ bullets. Something hit the back of our car, so I figured he was shooting at us too.
“Drive faster,” James said.
