The longest period of fog ever reported in the Bay of Fundy occurred at Saint John in July of 1833. The fog lasted twenty-eight days and resulted in three buggy accidents, the accidental death of an unlucky Mr. Morris Ryder, who stepped off a dock by mistake, and the migration of fifty-six residents who packed up and moved upriver to Grand Bay and never returned.

Thirty-Nine
It was easy to take Gigi’s advice and stay home from school on Friday. Ali told her parents she had a stomachache. After her outburst earlier in the week, they were inclined to believe her. Best of all, Digger called the school and left a message for Ms. Ryder, letting her know Ali wouldn’t be at the debate team event. Ali was surprised by her relief. If only a simple phone call from Digger could fix everything that was wrong with her life!
The funny thing was, Ali realized it bothered her more that Murray and Cassie were mad at her than it did that Emily was. This was a surprise, because she’d been so impressed by Emily, so excited to be her friend. But there was something sad about Emily, not just about her parents splitting up, but about how much she wanted to be the best. Ali also knew that neither Murray nor Cassie would tell anyone her secret, even if they were angry. But Emily? She’d like to think Emily wouldn’t tell anyone, but she wasn’t sure.
And then there was Alfie. She’d been mad yesterday, but that wasn’t fair. He was trying to make everyone happy, just like she was. Worst of all, she hadn’t shared the most important thing about herself. He was her cousin; he deserved to know, even if it did upset his grandfather. She vowed to apologize on Monday and tell him she was a Copycat.
She spent the morning finishing The Golden Compass. It was a hard book, but interesting. The idea that people in Lyra’s world had souls that lived outside their bodies intrigued her. Maybe her ability to transform herself into other creatures was her way of expressing her soul.
Right after lunch, she got to work. She grabbed a handful of Post-it notes from Gigi’s desk, and some colorful markers, and climbed back into bed. Today was the day to get to know herself. Unlike her rules, this wasn’t about coping with the world around her. It was about learning about the world within her. It was strange at first, thinking about things she liked, but pretty soon it was fun. She started with food.
