Ali did a little bounce on the couch. “All we have to do is research how much bacteria the average plant or person has on them and then do a rough estimate!”

Emily squealed. “That’s brilliant! Of course, we can just assume that any boys we see are covered in billions of bacteria, since they smell so bad.” They erupted into giggles, loud enough that the school librarian shushed them, which made them giggle more.

“Okay, here’s the plan,” said Emily. “Come to my house after school next week. We’ll do the field research and then decide how to organize our presentation. Isn’t it great Mr. Corby made us partners? Usually I have to come up with ideas by myself, but we work so well together!”

Now Ali understood why Jackson had agreed to move. There was something about Emily that made you want to please her, which was probably why she was so popular. “I can’t do it Monday afternoon—I have debate team.”

“I didn’t know you joined the debate team,” Emily said, as if she should have.

“Uh-huh. I’m kind of nervous because we start debating next week.”

“You’ll be great,” Emily declared. “I should have joined. I’m going to be a lawyer when I grow up like my dad. He loves debating.” Ali was surprised by how wistful she sounded.

“I bet it’s not too late for you to join.”

Emily shook her head. “I can’t. Tuesday is my only free day. I figure skate, do modern dance, take Japanese lessons, and volunteer with my mom at the community center.”

“Whoa.”

“My dad says you can only be excellent if you put in the work.” She wrote her address and phone number on a rainbow-colored sticky note. “Why don’t you come home with me on Tuesday? My mom can drive you home afterward if your parents can’t come get you.”

Mr. Corby popped his head into the library. “Time to come back, everybody!”

Emily linked her arm through Ali’s. “We are going to be such an amazing team!”

Ali nodded. They were an amazing team, and Emily was exactly the kind of person she wanted to be friends with: popular, smart, and nice. Now all she had to do was make Emily want to be friends with her.
