“Before me, my Beloved, is a life that I want to be great and beautiful, a life that will find its place in the memory of men to come, that will merit their respect and affection, a life that began when I met you. I am convinced that it is eternal, for I believe that you are able to manifest the power that God has entrusted to me. It is a power that I will embody in great words and deeds just as the sun makes the fragrant wildflowers to grow in the meadow. Thus shall my love continue for me and for generations to come, pure of the egotism that might extend it and exalted above the degradation that would restrict it to you.”

The youth stood and walked slowly around that room. He looked out the window and saw the moon rising above the horizon and filling the sky with delicate rays. He came back and wrote in the letter:

“Forgive me, Beloved, for I have addressed you as ‘you,’ yet you are the fair half of me which I lost when we left the hand of God at the same moment. Forgive me, my Beloved.”

COMMUNION

COMMUNION

Where are you now, my fair one? Are you in that small garden watering the flowers that love you as the infant loves its mother’s breast? Or are you in your chamber where you have built an altar to purity and sacrificed there my spirit and my last breath? Or are you among your books, increasing your knowledge of men’s wisdom, though you have no need to seek wisdom even from the gods?

Where are you, companion of my soul? Are you in the temple praying for me? Or are you in the meadow, holding communion with nature, the source of your wonderment and dreams? Are you in the huts of the poor, comforting the broken-hearted with the sweetness of your soul and filling their hands with your charity?

You are everywhere, for you are from the spirit of God. You are in every time, for you are stronger than fate.
