Partway through the second half, Susie pushed back tears when Britta was seated beside the manger and leaned forward gently to touch the infant, whose tiny hands were moving. If Susie wasn’t mistaken, the baby was cooing at Britta. Witnessing this precious exchange, Susie was moved by her sister’s very natural portrayal of Mary. What a wonderful mother she’ll be someday. . . .
Later, as the program was coming to a close, Susie shifted in her chair and happened to glance over at the other side of the room. And there was Obie, looking right at her!
She caught her breath at how very handsome he looked in his Sunday attire—and at his endearing smile as he held her gaze.
Goodness, she thought, trying not to blush and refocusing her attention on the front of the classroom.
———
As the young scholars lit candles, everyone began to softly sing “Silent Night” in German. Susie could hear Mamma’s voice beside her. The glow on her dear face added to the reverent atmosphere, and the words of the old carol were a lovely reminder of that long-ago holy night.
Later, while families stood in line to give gifts of fruit, handmade items, and cards to the young brunette teacher, Susie noticed Hazel with Obie and was touched she’d come for Britta’s sake.
Mamma remained seated as Susie walked to the back of the line with a wrapped package of Britta’s wunnerbaar-gut popcorn balls and a jar of special peanut butter spread. Soon, Britta made her way over to stand with her. “Did ya see Hazel?” Susie asked.
“She’s here?” Britta looked around.
Discreetly, Susie pointed to the back of Hazel’s and Obie’s heads, several families ahead of them.
“I was so busy bein’ Mary, I didn’t notice her.” Britta’s eyes shone. “Wait here.” And she made her way up to her friend.
While Britta and Hazel greeted each other, Obie glanced back, and seeing Susie, he headed her way. “I hoped I might see ya here,” he said, his eyes sparkling as he reached into the pocket of his black coat and handed an envelope to her. “Wait till ya get home to open it.”
“Okay. Denki.” She smiled, her heart ever so happy. “How’ve ya been?”
“Bein’ home again is nice,” he said, grinning. “Mamm is spoiling me with her cooking.”
Susie smiled. “I’m sure she is. When did ya get in?”
“Last night.” He glanced toward the front. “Looks like the line’s movin’. I’ll talk to ya later,” he said, giving her a nod before he headed up to return to his spot beside Hazel.
Susie’s face warmed at their brief encounter, and she slipped what appeared to be a Christmas card into her shoulder purse, ever so curious.
