‘Frankly my dear,’ she said answering him at last, smiling at him: sophisticated, cool, catching his eye, ‘Frankly my dear, I don’t give a damn.’

And then she spoilt the effect by reaching up shyly, as she had the day of the garden party, and touching the short springy hair. He caught her hand and brought it down to his mouth and kissed it.

‘I love you Pauly,’ he said. ‘I’ve loved you all my life.’

Just at that moment, just as he kissed her hand, before she could say anything at all, a group of Hawaiians started another Christmas song somewhere further along the beach.

And the song they were singing in another language, there in the hot sunshine on Christmas Day on the other side of the world, was her father’s favourite song, ‘I’m Dreaming of a White Christmas’, that he had sung so long ago to the Russian chimpanzee, in the circus.

*

Pauline and Joseph walked slowly along the beach in the sunshine towards the hotel. The drifting Christmas singing faded into the sound of the sea, the sound of the waves breaking on the shore; coloured birds flashed sometimes between the trees.
