  16. Don't miss out!

"Yeah?" She said, turning around, her arms crossed. She still had hard feelings every time she thought about him bullying her sister all those years ago.

"I know we've gotten off on the wrong foot a couple of times now. I just want to say that I'm sorry about everything."

"You don't have to apologize to me. I'm just here to make sure this job gets done for my sister."

"I know. I'll get back to work," he said, a sad sort of look on his face.

As she walked back toward the house, all she could think about was turning around and running straight into his arms like some kind of romance novel. But thankfully her logical mind prevailed. Nothing good could come from falling in love with Cooper.

As Kate helped Mia wash the evening dishes, the new guests went upstairs to retire for the night. Dinner had been pot roast and mashed potatoes, and Kate was getting very accustomed to southern food.

Evie hadn't come down for dinner, texting she was still too full from lunch and was going to watch some videos in their room.

“Maybe I should go up and make sure that she doesn't want something to eat before we put all of this away,” Kate said. She glanced out the window into the backyard and saw Cooper still working away even though the sun was going down.

“Okay. Just let me know if she wants me to make her a plate. Do you think he's going to go home soon?" Mia said, laughing.

"Who knows? He's on quite a guilt trip, so we might even get a new wing built on this place before it's over with," Kate said, laughing as she ran up the stairs.

She walked down the hall and into her room, but Evie wasn't there. She checked the bathroom and every other room down the hallway that she could. No sign of her. She ran back down the stairs and looked around the living room.

"What's wrong?"

"It's Evie. She wasn't in the room. I didn't see her leave, did you?"

"No. I thought she was up there this whole time. She must've slipped out while we were talking to the guests," Mia said, wiping her hands on a dish towel and walking into the living room. "She couldn't have gone far. Maybe she just went out to sit by the lake or something."

Kate and Mia walked out the front door and started looking around the property. They walked down to the lake, back to where Cooper was working and all the way around the other side. There was no sign of her.

Kate was starting to get really nervous. It was almost dark, so she pulled out her phone and called Evie’s. It went straight to voicemail. "Oh no, her phone must be dead. What should we do?"

"Everything okay?” Cooper asked, as he walked up.

"Kate's daughter is missing. Have you seen her?"
