  16. Don't miss out!

“This makes no sense. How is this possible? The site must have messed up. Maybe they switched my results with someone else.”

Evie sat down next to her, obviously interested in this new drama that had entered both of their lives. “So, how are you going to figure this out?”

“I don’t know…” Kate continued staring at the screen like the words were in another language. A sister?

“Couldn’t you track down your father and ask him?”

The thought made her sick to her stomach. The last person she wanted to talk to was her father. He’d left her decades ago, so what were the chances that he’d be honest now?

“I don’t have a clue how to find him.”

Evie slid the computer closer and opened Facebook. “What’s his name?”

Chapter Three

Kate couldn’t believe she was looking at a picture of her father. Or at least the man she always thought was her father. Evie had found him within minutes using the social media skills that all teenagers seemed to have.

He looked a lot older, his hair thinning and gray, slight bags forming under his eyes. He was still married to the same woman, and their kids looked to be teenagers now. His profile said he lived back in Rhode Island now, just a town away from where she was sitting at the moment.

“See, that is where he works,” Evie said, pointing at the screen. You could find out a lot about a person from social media, which was really scary when Kate thought about it.

“I can’t contact him. He made it abundantly clear that he didn’t want me to contact him.”

“You want me to do it?” Evie offered. Kate chuckled, knowing full well that her spunky daughter would do it in a heartbeat.

“No, but thanks,” she said, smiling slightly.

“Mom, you have to do this. You might have a sister. And that attorney said your mother left something to you. This could be our big break!”

“Our big break? What do you think she left us?”

“A yacht? A mansion?”

“In Carter’s Hollow? I would highly doubt that,” Kate said, laughing.

“Well, we’ll never know if you don’t get some courage and contact the man, will we?”

She blew out a breath. “Okay, fine. How do I get his phone number?”

“He doesn’t have one listed.”

“So, how am I supposed to contact him then, technical genius?”

Evie rolled her eyes. “Jeez, Mom, I just showed you where he works.”

“You can’t be serious, Evie. I’m not showing up at his work. That’s a recipe for disaster… and a restraining order.”

“Mom…”

“Okay, fine. I’ll do it,” Kate conceded. She didn’t want her daughter to think she was weak. She’d deal with this issue head on, if for no other reason than to show her daughter she was strong.
