"No, sorry. I was back here hammering away. I didn't see anyone, not for the last few hours."
Kate started to shake. "Oh my gosh. Oh my gosh."
"Take some deep breaths, Kate. I'm sure she's fine. She'll probably be back in a few minutes. She couldn't have gone far, especially not without a car."
"Why would she do this? Why would she just wander off?"
"You know she likes to go explore. Why don't we get the golf cart and drive around a little bit and see if we can find her."
"I'll drive," Cooper said. Both women looked at him for a moment and then everybody turned and headed towards the golf cart.
Mia had never felt so helpless in her life. They rode around the property, calling Evie’s name over and over, to no avail. It was like she had vanished into thin air.
Finally, as the hours wore on, they called the police. Unfortunately, Carter's Hollow was a tiny town with only a couple of deputies. They were handling a car accident on the edge of town, so they wouldn't be available to search for her until daylight.
That left it up to Kate, Cooper and Mia to try to find her, and they were having absolutely no luck. It was almost midnight, and she still wasn't back. Mia had a terrible feeling in the pit of her stomach.
At least it was June which meant it wasn't cold at night. But not knowing where her niece was with so much rocky terrain and possibly dangerous animals made her feel sick to her stomach. For some reason, she felt guilty, even though she hadn't done a thing. She just wanted to find Evie and bring her back home safely.
"Why don't I put on a pot of coffee?" Cooper said as they sat in the living room. There was nowhere else to look, and Kate’s voice was hoarse from screaming her daughter’s name for so many hours.
"That would be great. Thanks, Cooper," Mia said. Those were words that she never thought she'd hear come out of her mouth.
"I just don't understand this. Evie has always been a spontaneous kid, but she's never just left like this without telling me. I'm so scared," Kate said. Mia put her arm around her sister and pulled her close.
"We're going to find her. Everything is going to be okay. We just need daylight to come." Even as she said it, she didn’t know if she was right. Was she giving her sister false hope?
"She could get eaten by a bear or bitten by a snake before then. I have to find her," Kate said, standing up and moving toward the door again, her voice almost a whisper now.
