Twelve minutes later a Municipal Police car drove up. Nazari and three men got out. Only one of them in full duty uniform. Nazari wore a police jacket over the clothes she had on before. The other two men took off their police arm bands and walked towards separate parked cars, presumably going home. The uniformed cop and Nazari came into the station lobby. She reached behind her back and unclipped a holster from her belt. It was a Sig-Pro service piece. She saw me sitting in the waiting area and held up a finger like, one minute. The uniform buzzed them into the station offices.

A couple of minutes later she came out and walked over to me. Without the Sig-Pro, which I figured got registered back into the station armory. She looked beat. She said, “Will you come home with me?”

“Of course. What happened.”

“I’ll tell you in the car. I don’t want to talk here.”

We walked out of the station. And got into her Peugeot. Closed the doors. She turned to me. Her eyes were rimmed red.

She said, “It’s Rigalle, the chief. You remember him?”

Chapter Twenty-Seven

I said, “Yes of course, director of municipal police.”

“He’s dead.” She spoke deliberately, as if each word were precious.

“What happened?”

“I received an emergency text when I was in the car, waiting for you.” She rubbed her eye with a fist. “I tried calling you a few times, but I had to go.”

“I understand. You got the call and had to go.”

She nodded. “I was the last to respond. They even called in reserves.”

“I noticed.”

“So after I got my weapon I went to the scene. I got to the location and it was Alain’s house, which I know pretty well. I assumed that it was bad, but nobody had told me what I was going to find in there.” She started bawling. I let her. She wept in gusts and bursts, with violence. Then she stopped. “My colleagues were canvassing neighbors and the job was to set up a clean perimeter so that the investigators could have a decent crime scene, you know.”

I nodded. “Go on.”

“But I had to see, of course.” She looked at me. “How could I not, right?”

“Right.”
