The cleaner was still up on the sofa with his back to the door, on his tip-toes, stretching his stout and tough body for a hard to reach spot. He was sucking up dust from the corner with his right hand, while holding himself against the wall with his left. Then he switched hands and steadied himself, using the free hand to shake out a shoulder cramp. I stepped into the room, took up a firing position and shot him once in the back. The guy tumbled off the sofa with a loud thud. I pulled him by the foot and rotated the body away from the cloth-covered furniture. Then I stepped back about three yards and aimed at the back of his head. The Beretta made two loud pops and the cleaner’s face exploded out along the floor.
I thought, Monday morning is not the right time to clean. That’s Friday night.
Chapter Thirty-Two
The second cleaner had an identical weapon. I wiped them both and hid one of them in the bottom of the carrier box. The other went into my waistband, in the back, with a round in the chamber. Then I hunted down the four casings. One for the first cleaner and three for his buddy. The first one was all the way down the stairs in a corner. The casings went into the carrier box with the gun.
The first cleaner’s body had slipped down several steps. I took both of his wrists and pulled him up. Then dragged him along the hallway and into the second office. The mop was still leaning against the wall where he had left it. The carrier box contained plenty of cloth wipes, a roll of white garbage bags, a box of latex gloves, a box of plastic sanitary booties and assorted spray bottles and containers of cleaning product. I pulled out a pair of latex gloves and put them on. Then put a pair of blue sanitary booties over my hiking boots. Tight fit, but they didn’t tear.
I cleaned my way backwards, from the stairwell, down the corridor and into the office. I used a combination of paper towels to pick up the big stuff, anti-bacterial spray bottle and wipes to clean off the residue, and a good old fashioned mop and bucket to finish off. I cleaned blood, brains, skull fragments, hair, and my footprints. Neatly removed all traces from the corridor and packed the cleaning tools into the office. Then I closed the office door. Now I wanted to know where the other bodies were. That is, the Woodcutter and his friends.
I thought, secondary staircase.
