Chapter Fifty-One

The screwdriver went back in my sleeve. I pushed the duct tape back into place. Then, I pulled the guy back into the Hortensia bush, and started scavenging.

He was dressed in regular clothing. Jeans and a pull-over windbreaker. Despite that, the guy was well equipped. Tactical vest with Motorola radio and extra magazines for his weapon, which was a Heckler and Koch MP5SD. The MP5 is an excellent close quarters, tactical submachine gun. High-end German machining. Light and handy, easy to use, accurate and quiet. It’s the go-to gun for units that can afford it, because it isn’t cheap. Typically only the best military units and highest end private contractors get MP5s.

The SD variant takes a regular H&K MP5 and adds an integral suppressor that muffles the sound and muzzle flash. One of the ways it does that is by slowing the bullet down to sub-sonic speeds. Because a supersonic bullet’s going to make quite a bang when it breaks the sound barrier. So the MP5SD stops that from happening.

I checked the weapon. Locked and loaded with one in the chamber and twenty-nine rounds left in the mag. The guy had two extra magazines in the vest. Overkill, but reassuring. I put them into my jeans pockets anyway. I thumbed the selector on the MP5 to the second position, which is a three-round burst, palmed back the bolt and then over to lock it down. While my hands were busy doing that from muscle memory, my eyes were up and scanning.

Straight ahead was nothing but rain. To my left, the floodlights were lighting up still more rain. To my right was the north end of the estate, a large field of grass with a big tree smack in the middle of it. The tree was about fifty yards from my position. I saw movement behind it, the tail end of someone’s run to get cover behind the tree.

The MP5 can be fired accurately to two hundred yards. That’s for a highly trained operator firing a regular MP5 on a nice sunny day, no wind, no rain, no pressure. But a sub-sonic, slow bullet fired out of a suppressed barrel isn’t going to pack as much of a punch at two-hundred yards. But at fifty there isn’t an issue. At fifty you just lead the guy by an extra half inch.
