- About the Author
“That’s true. What’re you thinking?”
Sam was making this up as she went. “We send Narcotics after the dealers. My team goes after Vincent at home while the DEA takes down the operation. In a coordinated strike tonight.”
“Kavanaugh won’t go for that.”
“It’s this or nothing. We can’t leave those pills on the street now that we know who has them.”
“I’ll call Kavanaugh,” Farnsworth said, “and I’m coming back in.”
“Okay, thanks for handling him.”
“No problem.”
Sam called her entire squad back to work with a 911 text message. Need all hands on deck immediately. Please get here as soon as you can.
Carlucci and Dominguez usually worked the late shift, but they were off that night, so no one was in the pit when she cut through to take the phone to Foster in the interview room.
She delivered it to him, and Malone stayed with him while she went to call Faith Miller. “I need to update you on what’s going on. Foster is giving us the names of the other dealers who were working for both Vincent and Lawton in exchange for a deal that’s yet to be negotiated. We believe most if not all of them are in possession of the laced pills they’ve been selling to Lawton’s customers as part of Vincent’s plan to run Lawton out of the business, which makes Foster critical to us. We believe it’s imperative that we round up those dealers immediately, before someone else is killed.”
“Agreed,” Faith said.
“But rounding up his dealers will tip off Vincent that we’ve infiltrated his organization. The plan was to put the pieces together to go after Vincent in a day or two, but knowing there’s more laced product out there, we can’t afford to wait. We’re coordinating a three-pronged raid that’s going down tonight. Narcotics will take care of the dealers. My team is going after Vincent at home, and the DEA will raid his warehouse in Alexandria. The chief is notifying the DEA that we’ve moved up the timeline.”
“I’m still with Leslie Lawton, going over her statement and filling in some gaps. We’ve moved her to a new safe location.”
“It’s coming together.”
“Keep me posted.”
“Will do.”
Next, Sam used the BlackBerry to call Nick.
“Hey, babe. How’s it going?”
“It’s gonna be an all-nighter. We’ve blown this thing wide open, and we’re going in for the kill tonight.” She filled him in on the details. “Roberto tipped me off that Leslie Lawton was involved in her husband’s business, and it’s taken off from there.”
“I’m glad you’ve figured out where the pills came from and why.”
“Doesn’t make me feel better about what’s happened, but at least we know.”
“That’ll matter to Angela and her kids. Maybe not now, but eventually.”
“I hope so.”
“It will, Sam, and it’ll matter to them that you were the one who got justice for him.”
“We haven’t gotten it yet, but we’re close.”
“Be safe out there. My wife means everything to me.”
