- About the Author
“Okay.” He took off like a shot.
“The poor kid has been plastered to me since he got home from school. I think he’s worried I’m going to die, too.”
With Jack gone, Sam snuggled in closer to Angela, putting her arm around her sister. “Do you want me to talk to him?”
Angela leaned her head on Sam’s shoulder. “I suppose it couldn’t hurt.”
“I’ll handle bedtime and have a chat with him.”
“Thanks.”
“What else do you need?”
“I can’t think of anything. Trace went to my house today and got the clothes we’ll need for the wake and funeral. Spencer’s brother, Jed, and his family got back from Italy finally. They ended up with their original flight when they couldn’t get anything sooner.”
“That must’ve been rough for them.”
“He sounded incredibly stressed on the phone.”
“I wish there was something more I could do, Ang. It breaks my heart that I can’t make this right for you.”
“I know and being here with you guys is a huge help. I just hope it won’t always hurt this bad.”
“My friend Roni mentioned the widow group she’s part of. She says they’ve made a huge difference for her. Derek is part of the group, too.”
“I don’t think I’m ready for anything like that.”
“No, but maybe you could talk to Roni? It might help to talk to someone who’s been there.”
“I’ll think about it.”
“Roni would want me to tell you the offer is on the table indefinitely.”
“Thank you, and please thank her, too.”
“I will. Did you eat something?”
“I had some soup earlier.”
“Is that enough for you and the baby?”
“Probably not, but it was all I could keep down. I’m so nauseated, I can’t bear to eat anything.”
“You need to keep checking in with your doctor.”
“I have another appointment on Thursday.”
“Should you wait that long?”
“It was her first available.”
“And she knows what you’re going through?”
“She does.”
“Hmmm, how would you feel if I asked Harry to come see you? He might be able to help.”
“No, I don’t want that. He’s a friend. It’s too weird. I’m fine. I promise.”
Sam didn’t believe she was fine at all, but she didn’t want to add to Angela’s stress by insisting she see their doctor friend. “Is there anything I can get you?”
“No, thanks.”
The dull, flat tone of Angela’s voice was in stark contrast to her usual animation. “I’ll leave you to get some rest. Text me if you need anything at all.”
“I’ll be out of your hair soon. The kids and I have to get back to a normal routine.”
“There’s no rush on any of that. You’re welcome here indefinitely.”
“Thank you, but you’ve got enough on your plate without worrying about me and my kids.”
“Ang, do you honestly think I’m going to worry about you less when you’re not staying with us anymore? It’s easier for me to have you here with us, so please stay as long as you’d like to.”
