- About the Author
“Whose idea was it to sell Lawton’s customers laced pills to try to run him out of the business?” Sam asked.
“I don’t know anything about that!”
“Sure, you don’t.” Sam glanced at Malone. “Let’s go. This guy is wasting our time.”
They stood and turned to leave the room.
“Wait! I want a deal.”
Sam turned back to him. “I’m listening.”
“I’m not the only one working for both of them. There’re others out there who have the laced pills.”
“Who else?”
He shook his head. “I’m not saying anything until I have a deal on the table that keeps me out of jail.”
Sam was tempted to walk away to call his bluff but knowing there were other dealers selling laced pills meant lives were in danger. She pulled a pad and pen out of her purse and opened it to a blank page. “Write down their names, addresses and phone numbers. If your information bears fruit, we’ll talk to the USA about a deal.”
“I want the deal first.”
“That’s not how this works. You help us, and then we help you. That’s how it works.”
He crossed his arms and gave her a bullish look.
“Going once, going twice…” She picked up the pad and started to leave the room again.
“Wait!”
Sighing, she turned to face him again. “I hate when people waste my time. What’s it going to be?”
“I’d need my phone to give you the info you want.”
“I’ll be right back.” Sam left the interrogation room and went upstairs to Archie’s office, where he was still at work. “I need the phone for Matthias Foster.”
He rifled through the bagged phones on his desk and found the one she needed. “Will you bring it back after? I haven’t gotten to it yet.”
“Yep. I need you to run it because he’s a link between two rival drug organizations, one of whom decided to try to run the other out of business by selling laced product to the other’s customers.”
“Holy crap,” Archie said. “Great job putting the pieces together on that. What’s the plan?”
“Foster is going to give us the names of the other dealers working for both organizations, and we’ll round them up before they can sell laced product to more unsuspecting customers.”
“Won’t that tip off the big boss when he suddenly can’t get in touch with his people?”
“I guess it will, which means we can’t wait another day to bring in the head honcho.” She let out a sigh. “This is going to be a long night.”
“Good luck, Sam. I know how much this one means to you.”
“Thanks.”
As she went back downstairs, she called the chief. “I know we just agreed to twenty-four hours with Kavanaugh, but Foster is willing to roll on the other double-crossing dealers in exchange for a deal, and Archie just made a good point. Rounding them up, which we have to do immediately since they’re in possession of laced pills, will tip off Vincent that we’ve infiltrated his organization.”
