  45. SNEAK PEEK: THE SHEARER’S WIFE

Jack nodded. ‘Yeah, good idea. That’s what this page is all about. Making people aware and asking for help when we need it.’ He turned to the computer and tapped a few keys.

Dave watched as a screen came up declaring that the page was the Barker Police Community page.

‘What do you want to say?’ Jack asked, his fingers hovering over the keys.

Dave shrugged. ‘Something like: Have you bought a new drone lately? If so, please read these conditions of where you are able to fly them. I don’t know. What’s going to get the most attention on Facebook?’

‘How about …’ Jack started to type. Got a new toy? A new love of your life? Does it fly like a bird? Do you know the rules? If you have a new drone, come and see us at the station and we’ll help you understand them.

‘Whatever you reckon,’ Dave said, reading over his shoulder. ‘I know nothing about social media.’

‘I know in Queensland the coppers use Facebook for lots of different things—issuing information on traffic congestion, call outs for witnesses, missing persons. Anything, really. They’ve got nearly a million followers.’

Dave laughed. ‘I don’t think our little Barker page will get to that extent, do you?’

‘Nah, but the reach of that page is incredible.’

‘Any news on Will today?’ Dave asked.

Jack shook his head. ‘Nothing from the footy club. On WhatsApp today, they said some of the fellas were going out to visit him later in the week to see if they could lend a hand with anything.’

‘Has Zara come in this morning?’

Jack shook his head. ‘No, and that’s for the best, I think.’

‘You can’t blame her for trying. I’d imagine that an exciting story like drones casing out farms to steal things from would be a great distraction from what she’s having to face.’

Jack looked over at Dave, the amazement clear on his face. ‘And that’s coming from a man who has a dislike of journalists and has always encouraged me to stay away from them.’

‘Hey, I didn’t say that I liked the idea, just said it would have to be a good distraction for her.’ Dave stood up. ‘Anyway, I’m going for a drive. Need to get some air. Might go back out and see what’s happening at Rowberry Glen. Are there any responses on the Facebook page before I go?’

Jack refreshed the page. ‘No. I wouldn’t have expected there to be yet. I only put the post up a couple of minutes ago.’

Dave nodded and started to walk out as Jack’s phone dinged. ‘That your girlfriend?’

Jack turned to scowl at him. ‘Bugger off,’ he said as he looked at the screen. ‘Oh, shit.’

‘What?’
