  45. SNEAK PEEK: THE SHEARER’S WIFE

‘I guess all you can do is make the decision when you get out there.’

Dave put the cup in front of her and sat down, just as a puff of foul-smelling air radiated up from under the table.

‘God almighty, Bob,’ Dave said as he fanned the smell away.

‘What about Zara—do you think she might know?’ Kim asked as she got up and moved away from the table. ‘I don’t know why that dog has to do that.’

‘Zara is part of the trouble,’ Dave answered. ‘She’s on our case to do something about the drones. I know she’s written a story about them because she came in and spoke to Jack, who told her there wasn’t an investigation going on and she wanted to know why.’

‘And why isn’t there?’

‘Well, really, up until now, I haven’t had enough evidence that there’s a problem. But I have three reports and one unofficial sighting. And when those reports came in, we were still on holidays and Jack didn’t want to stir up trouble with the locals in case someone had bought a new drone and didn’t know the rules. If that was the case, we could’ve just found them and warned them off.’

‘Have you asked anyone—’

Dave slammed down his cup and jumped up. ‘You are brilliant!’ He leaned down and gave Kim a smacking kiss before grabbing his jacket from the back of the chair.

‘What did I do?’ she asked, looking at him bemusedly.

‘Jack started some Facebook page. Maybe we’ll just put a call out over that and see what comes back. He told me that he’d already got fifty or so people on there. What are they called … followers? Likers? Followers sound like they’re zombies …’

Kim laughed. ‘Likers is a better word. I’ll see you when you get back. And take the dog with you so I don’t have to put up with him stinking the house out.’

Dave raced into the station and called out to Jack.

‘What’s wrong?’ Jack asked, appearing at the door.

‘Nothing, but I’ve had an idea. We don’t really know anything about that drone other than it’s flying out over land and so on, do we?’

‘That’s right.’ Jack reached over to a file and handed it to Dave. ‘This is all the information I have.’

‘Right, can you put a notice, or whatever it is you do, on that Facebook page and ask if anyone has bought a new drone and, if they have, to contact the station. And then can you get the rules that relate to drones regarding where and how they’re allowed to fly and put that up there too? Can you do that?’
