  45. SNEAK PEEK: THE SHEARER’S WIFE

‘Put the cameras up in the piggery. They streamed live footage and then some bloke was going to edit it and put it up on Facebook. Has that happened yet?’

‘Haven’t heard about it but I imagine so.’

‘The other two, Blue and Tonka, they just did as they were told. I didn’t see them cut the wires at the piggery, but they must’ve, ’cause Crumbs didn’t leave the pens. He took photos of everything. I think he was going to post them online too. Or get someone to. He’s not good with technology.

‘You need to go and talk to Zara. Crumbs knows about her. Said she was at a court case and she was … Can’t remember …’ He rubbed at his head and grimaced. ‘Interfering or annoying, or something. But he also said that someone took the fall for him in that case.’

Dave nodded. ‘Zara will be perfectly safe because this creep isn’t going anywhere.’

As if on cue, Crumbs and Tonka were led out of the humpy, their hands behind their backs, and shoved into a waiting car. Blue was conscious now but waiting for an ambulance.

‘You did good, Jack. Real good.’

‘Still don’t know who they are.’

‘We will by the time we’ve finished with them,’ promised Dave, then he clapped Jack on the back. ‘How did you get back on the grid, though?’

Jack told him about having to give his phone up and then the brainwave of playing to Crumbs’s ego. ‘He couldn’t wait to hear what was written about it all. I turned it on and all I could do was hope you’d know I was back online.’ ‘Egos get in the way every time,’ Dave said. ‘Anyway, mate, let’s get you home.’

Jack pulled the remaining camera pen out of his sleeve and gave it to Dave. ‘There might not be any pictures on that one. I pushed it all the way down in the side pocket of the jacket. I don’t know how they didn’t find it, but they didn’t. But hopefully you’ll get the conversation.’

‘I’m proud of you,’ Dave said.

Chapter 34

Zara pushed the drawer of her desk closed and looked around. She’d miss the office. The noise, the adrenalin rush and everything that went with working at the Farming Telegraph. Not that she’d miss it for good, but she had packed up her desk properly this time. Not like last time, when she’d sworn she’d come back.

She would stay writing for the paper; in fact, she was hoping to interview Jack and Dave about the piggery fiasco when she got back to Barker. She didn’t know whether they would talk to her, but she could try.
