His voice is halting. “I found an address at Emma’s house that made me wonder if she might have been in a rehab program in Florida at some point, but I e-mailed them and didn’t hear back. I’ve also been reaching out to people she’s friends with on social media. I feel like I’ve done everything I know how to do. And it still isn’t enough. I think it would take actual magic to find her.”

I’m not so sure about actual magic, but it seems to be the only thing we have right now. “What’s her full name?”

“Naomi Grace Greer.”

I tear out another sheet of paper and write her name in big letters. The aunts didn’t say I could ask the moon for things, but they did say I could follow my own intuition. I roll the paper up, then light it on fire and look up at the moon. “Please help us find Naomi Grace Greer. Mason needs her.”

The paper catches fire quickly and I drop it in the bowl, and we watch the paper darken and curl before letting off white smoke. Our chime candle is nearly out, so I grab a pinch of dried sage and sprinkle it over the candle, making the flame sputter. I read from the spell. “ ‘What was lost, now is found. Bring it to me, safe and sound. As I will it, so mote it be.’ ”

Mason’s head is down, so I can’t see his expression, but the words hang suspended between us, the moment full.

I press Thalia’s necklace close to my heart as we watch the candle flame work its way to the bottom, finally going out with a little wink and rush of smoke. We sit in silence for a moment, watching the smoke wind its way upward in circular patterns, moonlight forming a puddle around us.

Once the smoke disappears, Mason leans in. “You know what tonight feels like?”

My mind immediately answers for me. Like watching lightning bugs float in the darkness. Like the moment when the edge of the ocean meets your bare feet. Like that first rumble of thunder from a full sky. And it isn’t because of the spell or the letters or even my aunt’s magical house. It’s because of Mason.

I look up quickly, searching his eyes for some sign that he’s feeling the same thing. But he’s looking down at the melted candle wax, his gaze calm. “What?” I manage.

He pauses, then draws his eyes up to mine. “It feels like a beginning.”
