“Good idea. But in a minute? I’ve had a long couple of days, and it’s so nice up here.” She sighs, looking down at the garden. “The willow tree looks so pretty at night.”
I lean over to take a look. She’s right. Moonlight has painted the tree a silvery gray, and the wind has put the entire tree in motion, the leaves and branches swaying gently in the breeze.
“Willow trees must be your thing,” I say.
She hesitates. “This will probably sound weird, but I’ve actually never thought about them all that much. But that one’s amazing.”
A stronger breeze picks up, and Willow’s hair blows into my face, whipping my cheeks and forehead. I pretend to fight it off, and she attempts to cram it back into her ponytail. “You and the tree even have the same hair.”
She laughs. “My hair is the worst.”
This is obviously not true, and my eyes can’t help but linger on her hair. I’ve never seen red hair quite this color. Up close, I can see copper woven through it. I turn my attention back to the letter anyway. “Okay. So what about you?”
“What about me?” Her eyes are still on the tree, but she’s smiling now.
I nudge her knee. “The curse story says that every Bell woman will know what they want. You’re a Bell woman. What is the thing you want with a burning intensity?”
Her cheeks turn a subtle shade of cotton-candy pink. “Um…”
Don’t read into that, Mason, I instruct myself. I’m obviously not her burning desire. Although it obviously wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world. “I mean, any secret projects or plans?”
“Besides figuring out my twisted family history?” Her eyes dart up to mine. “I mean, yes. But… it’s sort of personal.”
Hilarious coming from someone who has literally read a book full of my most private thoughts. I pull my notebook out from my back pocket. “Hey, look. You know a lot about me. It’s only fair that I know more about you, right?” I’m starting to be more okay with the fact that Willow knows my deepest, darkest secrets. If someone was going to read my star log, Willow wasn’t a terrible choice.
“I took you to meet my witch aunts,” she says.
“Who were awesome, but I want to know more about you.”
