- About the Author
She shifted on her seat. Oh, that mouth. Now he was talking about a movie his friend had worked on that was up for an Oscar. She was impressed with what he was saying but her thoughts kept wandering to last night and having that mouth on her.
A flutter of excitement trickled over her body as a tumble of memories flashed through her mind. She wished she hadn’t run from him but she had and she couldn’t rewind time. However, perhaps she could make up for it—tonight.
“Would you like anything else?” James asked.
Megan glanced at her empty bowl. “No, thanks, that was lovely.”
“Coffee?”
She looked at him and tipped her head.
The candlelight danced on his face, highlighting the strong angle of his jaw and his straight nose.
“Coffee would be nice.” She paused. “But not here.”
“Oh?” He raised his eyebrows.
“Maybe back at yours.” God, when had she got so forward? “You said you don’t live far…from here.”
Surprise flashed over his face. “I don’t, it’s just around the corner.”
Had he presumed that coffee meant sex? Was he that kind of man? Or would he take her at her word—coffee, nothing else?
She guessed she’d have to wait and see. But one thing was for sure, her nerves of last night felt like a distant memory—the feel of James’ body against hers was one she wanted to make reality again.
“Well, that would be a nice end to the evening.” She placed her purse on the table and smiled. “If it’s really not far.”
“It isn’t, and I agree, a nice way to end to the evening.” He held her gaze for a moment then gestured to a passing waiter. “The bill, please.”
“Certainly, Mr Carter.”
“Tea, would be better,” Megan said. “Coffee will keep me awake all night.”
He nodded. “I can do tea for you. Wouldn’t want you up all night when you have a busy day tomorrow.”
“Thank you.” But she did want to stay up some of the night. With him.
The waiter appeared with the bill.
“Shall we—?”
“Absolutely not,” he said firmly.
She frowned. “Are you sure?” She and Dylan had always gone halves. It was how he’d liked to do it, so their outings were fair, he’d said.
“I asked you out for dinner.” James placed several notes on the tiny silver tray. “I want to pay.”
“Well thank you. It’s very kind of you and it was amazing food.”
“You’re welcome and I’m glad you enjoyed it. And there was nothing kind about it, I wanted your company.”
He stood and waited as she placed her napkin on the table and brushed a few crumbs from her lap.
Megan stood.
“We’ll walk to mine, if you’re okay to do that?” He glanced at her high heels.
“Of course. It’s a warm night.”
