- About the Author
She realised that she was still staring at him. That she had been for ages. It was as if he were a magnet that drew her focus to him.
He took a sip of his beer, his attention not leaving her.
A tingle went over Megan’s scalp and down her neck. There was a tightening in her belly. Damn, the guy was gorgeous and when his blue eyes settled on her, like she was the only woman in the place, it made her feel so special.
She stared down at her drink, swirling the stem between her fingers. What the hell was wrong with her? It wasn’t as if she’d had to go without it for long.
“Can I join you?” A deep voice came from her left.
Before she even looked she knew it was him.
“If you want to,” she said, peering up. She kept her voice deliberately cool. It was okay to admire him from afar, but he had a young girlfriend who was no doubt waiting for him in some trendy minimalist apartment and wondering what sexy lingerie to wear for him that night.
His expression faltered, but only for a second—a flash of surprise at her cool reaction maybe? He took a seat opposite her.
“Have you got company tonight or are you feeling thirsty?” He nodded at her two wine glasses.
“Both.” She huffed. “I was meeting my friend and got the first round in but she’s not coming now.”
“Nothing wrong, I hope.”
“No, on the contrary, she’s just got engaged so she’s busy…er…celebrating.”
“How nice.” He shrugged out of his jacket and rested it on the back of the chair next to him.
He wore a plain black, short-sleeved shirt with the collar undone. He had stubble on his cheeks, more than a day’s growth, and it was neatly trimmed. Megan wondered if his chest had a similar sprinkle of hair, if he’d have a dark trail from navel to…
What am I doing?
The wine had gone to her head.
She pushed her drink to one side and took a deep breath. “Yes, he just proposed on the London Eye so that’s all very exciting for them.”
“But it means you’re stood up.”
“Well, I don’t know about that, I just…” It was true, what could she say? She had been stood up but for the nicest possible reason.
He glanced at the pianist. “He’s good. I like this one. He was playing last time I was here.”
“When you were with your girlfriend, the young blonde one.” Megan pressed her lips together. Damn, why did she have to sound so uptight? This was the first bloke she’d spoken to, other than her father, Brendon and the estate agents, since she’d run down the aisle. Did she have to sound so whiney?
