  25. About the Author

“I’ve always called you that.” He pushed a lock of hair behind her ear and smiled. “Because you’re my honey.” He moved his head closer. “And I’ve missed your sweetness.”

She pressed her hand to his chest, hoping to prevent him coming nearer. “We’re over. You have to understand that. There will be no second chance.”

“No.” He shook his head. “We’re not over. This is just a little blip.”

“It’s one hell of a blip, Dylan. I left you in church, remember.” Drastic measures were called for. No more pussyfooting around and worrying about his feelings. “I changed my mind. I decided I didn’t want to marry you, remember? I left you at the altar.”

“And you made me look a complete fucking fool in front of everyone. They were all talking about me. Feeling sorry for me, thinking I was a loser…” His nostrils flared and he slid his hand to the back of her head, balling her hair into his fist.

“Please, don’t. Get off.” She froze as her scalp complained at the sting, knowing movement would make it worse.

“Remember how good we were together,” he said, speaking against her temple. “When I grabbed you like this.” He wrapped his other arm around her waist and tugged her close. “And just took you. You used to love that, Megan. A bit of rough, a bit of fun.” His breaths were loud. “You can’t deny that.”

“But it’s over now.” She pushed him, throwing a good dose of effort into shoving at his chest. It was true she had loved him once, or thought she had, but it was over.

He released her and stepped back, a smile on his face. “Oh yeah, you remember everything, and you miss it too. I can tell. Look at you, flushed, breathing fast. It was always the same, whenever we were near each other clothes had to come off.” He reached for the base of his T-shirt. “Like now.”

“No, seriously. We can talk if you want but not…”

He cocked his head and chuckled but thankfully left his T-shirt on. “It will remind you of what you threw away. Of what you can have again, right now.”

“I know what I threw away, Dylan. And I threw it away because I didn’t want it.” She paused. She’d thought she had wanted it once, but no, she hadn’t…it had all crashed down around her. The truth had flared in her face. “I didn’t want you, Dylan. I’m sorry, but I didn’t and I still don’t want you.”

He jerked his head, as though he’d been slapped across the cheek.

A stab of regret went through Megan. If only it could have been different. If only no one needed to get hurt. She wasn’t proud of causing the pain in his eyes.
