I shake my head. Shelby fucked up the account and I can’t get ahold of Tony. If only I could speak to him, I know I can come up with an agreement. Claire might be willing to work for them outside Blend—like a side job.
“I have to speak with Claire about it,” I say, keeping the rest to myself.
“Claire is bad news,” he says. “You should stay away from her.”
“I hope that’s not part of your best man’s toast during our wedding,” I say while studying the contracts he dropped.
He gasps and starts coughing. “You’re kidding?”
“No, I’m going to ask her to marry me.”
“When?”
“Let me see, today is Tuesday…I don’t know yet,” I say because even though I have the ring, there are a few things we have to solve, including the three little words she hasn’t said yet. I know she loves me, but fuck if she’s not making me work hard for it.
“You’re serious,” he says.
“Yep,” I answer. “So, whatever issue you have with her, solve it. In fact, apologize to her for what happened three years ago.”
He glares at me and before he speaks, my phone rings.
“Sir, I have Shelby Black on line one,” announces my assistant when I pick it up.
“Thank you,” I groan.
“Shelby, what a pleasure to hear from you.” I try to sound pleasant and polite, but what I want to say is, “You bitch, stop making Claire’s life a living hell or you’ll pay for it.”
“What can I do for you?”
Devon stares at the phone and then at me. He’s not a fan either.
“Would you be interested in buying part of my company?” she asks without greeting me.
I arch an eyebrow and put her on speaker. “How unusual, are you dissecting the branches and selling them? Which part are you offering me?”
“The Denver branch,” she answers. “We want to sell it soon. We have a few big accounts and some of the employees that’ll stay behind are knowledgeable.”
Devon shakes his head. I signal him to be quiet.
“The branch isn’t worth much. You just opened it, why would I want to buy it?”
“As I said, some of the staff is pretty competent. We hired a few locals who are promising and the accounts we’ve landed so far are worth keeping.”
“What’s going to happen to Ms. Solis?”
She chuckles. “We’re transferring her to London. She’s a great asset, we want to make sure the buyer is interested. Unless…she quits.”
“Aren’t you offering her a severance package?”
“We won’t fire her. It’s up to her if she wants to move or not.”
I close my eyes and remain calm. “That’s cold.”
