“What I need is a team,” he says. “Both of you, together.”
“I wouldn’t disagree with your conclusion,” I smirk at Claire. “I think I mentioned it a couple of times, haven’t I, Ms. Solis?”
“Ancient history,” she says, with a stern face. “What is it you’re suggesting, Mr. Gyles?”
“I want you two to work on the proposal. Then, we’ll decide if we give you the account.”
“Mr. Gyles, with all due respect,” Claire says. “My company has everything you need.”
“You have part of what I need, he has the rest. At least, that’s how I see it. I like that your firm has international ties. Also, that he’s local.”
“I was born and raised here in Colorado,” Claire protests. “I went to DU for my bachelor’s and my master's degree. I know this market.”
“You just came back from working almost three years in New York, Ms. Solis,” I argue. “My company was founded in this state.”
“I like your idea of coming to the winery and figuring out what we have to offer to the consumers,” Tony says. He doesn’t say anything about our stupid argument.
“Any time works for me. I can be there this weekend,” I offer, pulling out the phone to have my assistant book the flight.
“This weekend we are going to be out of town,” Tony says “But why don’t I see you at my house the weekend after. Arrive on Thursday. We have a guesthouse where you two can stay.”
“This isn’t standard procedure,” Claire protests. “I agree to go, but I’ll work on my proposal separately. I think you’ll find that Blend can deliver high quality service without having to rely on our competitors.”
“I’ll have my assistant email you the information,” he says.
“We’ll see you next weekend,” I add, watching Claire. Studying her posture.
She’s not thrilled about Tony’s move, but I’m not sure how angry she is about it either.
I think this will be easier than I expected. In order to win the account, I have to deliver something the entire family will approve. Working with Blend isn’t ideal, but Claire is less than thrilled about this new turn of events.
If I’m patient, this account will be mine one way or another. She’ll either quit or give in. Working alongside her gives me a chance to meet my real goal. This is a win for me.
“Try to arrive on Thursday, if possible,” Tony requests.
“My assistant made lunch reservations next door, would you to like join me?” Claire invites him as she gives me a glare.
Okay, I’m not invited. I smile, waiting for the rebuttal.
“The bistro is lovely. They carry our wine. You should try it,” he answers. “Is it for two?”
