I still don’t know what to do, if I should tell Nate or not. It’s none of my business, but I feel like overhearing them made it my business. I just want to forget that whole night.

Taylor finally answers the phone, and something inside me shrivels like a piece of fruit left too long in the sun.

Nate shifts. “Taylor, what’s up?”

I look away when he starts talking, cringing harder with every word.

“Sorry, just two minutes, I promise... Yeah... Yeah, I just—okay... Know what?”

There’s a long silence on Nate’s end. I can still hear Taylor on the other line, but her words are mumbled. I strain my ears as hard as I can, trying to understand what she’s saying. I don’t trust her.

I get nothing.

Nate says a few more things, then hangs up and glances over at me. I don’t recognize the look on his face. I’m not sure if I’ve ever seen it before. It’s worse than disappointed, but not quite angry. And there is an air of something else, something like disgust. He can barely meet my eyes.

I open my mouth to speak, but his phone dings and he stares down at the screen for the longest moment.

“Well? What did she say?” I ask, feeling weirdly panicked. Why did he look at me like that and then not say anything?

Nate shakes his head, but doesn’t answer. He’s still looking down at his phone.

Something happened.

“What’s wrong?” I say, hoping he answers me this time.

When he looks up again and shows me his eyes, they’re hard and distant. “Taylor just sent—what is this?”

He holds out his phone for me to see and the air between us is suddenly different. There’s a tone to his voice that I don’t like. I don’t know what it is, I just know I don’t like it.

I glance down and the picture on the screen steals my breath. My own eyes stare back at me, hard and afraid.

I look up at Nate and he’s clearly waiting for me to explain. I don’t know where to start. I don’t know how Taylor found this photo or why she sent it to him. I don’t understand any of this.

And then it hits me hard.

This is the reason why they fired me. They found—Taylor found out about my past somehow and told them. She got me fired. There’s no other explanation.

I wish I could smack her across her pretty little face. The bitch is playing games, but I don’t have time for her shit. This is my life.
