Before I know what I’m doing or what I’ll say, I’m pounding on the door to my father’s Tribeca loft—the secret rental he has no idea I know about. The one he bought for his new bitch.

The door swings open, but it isn’t my father waiting on the other side. The men’s shirt she’s wearing swallows her compact little body, and it’s clear there is nothing underneath. Her face is bare, her long hair tousled. I stare at her for a long time, like if I stare long enough, she’ll somehow vanish.

I look her over and roll my eyes hard enough for them to go around the globe. “So embarrassing.”

“Who are...” Her voice trails off, and a glint of recognition flashes in her eyes.

I brush past her hard enough to make her stumble back a step because I don’t want to have to make her cry. “Where is he?”

She doesn’t answer, just stares at me, maybe in shock, then closes her mouth.

“Where the hell is he?” I snap, snaking from room to room. And then I hear it.

The shower is running.

I push the bathroom door open and the steam warms my face. I hear him mumble something, maybe for her, but the words get lost under the strong downpour. I call him and the water comes to an abrupt stop.

When he steps into the bedroom with me, he’s wearing a towel high around his waist. “Taylor...”

The shock on my father’s face is unmistakable.

And then he sighs, backed too far into a corner to escape, but there’s no forgiveness in my face. “What are you doing here, Taylor?”

Fists clenched at his sides, ropes of veins cording his bare, wet arms, he towers over me, but I’m not afraid. I know he would never touch me. He never has, not once.

“She did it because of you, you asshole,” I snap, lit and burning, but he remains impassive.

“What are you talking about?”

I ignore him and catch the bitch fumbling for her clothes out the corner of my eye.

“Mom’s fighting for her life, and you’re here? With her?” He reaches for my arm, but I push him back. “You’re so gross.”

“Taylor, calm down.” He makes a wall with his arms, keeping me from shoving him again. “Leave Izzy out of this.”

That bitch shifts around as her eyes move over my face and pick me apart.

I glare at him. “Was it just about sex? Is that why you cheated on Mom? So you could fuck her whenever you want?”
