“There’s nothing tying her to the actual crime scene,” he says, and I finally understand, but also, this still makes no sense. “Listen, why don’t you come down to the—”
I brush past him and snatch the door open for him. “If you don’t go after her, I will.”
“I would highly advise against that, Ms. Maxwell. It’s in your best interest to not involve yourself further. We’re on it.” He heads out the door and looks back over his shoulder. “Take care, Ms. Maxwell.”
I say nothing, just wait for the door to close.
I should feel relief. I thought I would when this day came, when my name was cleared. I didn’t do it. They know I didn’t do it. But there’s this part of me that just can’t let Taylor get away with this. Not after everything I’ve been through. Not after everything I know now. She deserves to be punished. Anybody who does what she’s done deserves to be punished.
I’m not going to do anything stupid.
I’m just going to talk to her. Talk. That’s all I want. To hear her admit what she did.
I find the place easily. I checked Taylor’s Instagram and she geotagged a selfie from inside the W Hotel’s ballroom an hour ago.
I’m wearing one of the Balmain dresses Jared bought me because I had nothing else that was appropriate. It’s riding up my ass and I have to tug it down my thighs every ten steps, but I’ll manage.
The news hasn’t leaked to the press yet. They don’t know about Mei. About Jared. They don’t know I’m innocent. But no one recognizes me. No one stops me or rushes over to snap pictures. I have on a full face of makeup, my hair is ridiculously straight and my heels are so tall I’m virtually unrecognizable. The last image they have was of me coming out of the precinct in tangled, four-day-old hair and wrinkled sweats.
When I finally spot Taylor standing by a large window posing for selfies with an Emily Ratajkowski look-alike, a current passes through me. It’s the perfect iteration of the night we first met. She’s stunning, her long hair slicked back into a high pony, her smile wide and flawless. She’s standing tall in a pale blue mini dress and it’s obvious she’s not wearing anything underneath, but this is clearly her thing.
