I don’t give her one. Just shake my head, like this is all too much for me to process. “Well, she has to find some way to take the heat off herself, doesn’t she?”

Glover stares at me for a long time before lifting a card from her back pocket. “Here,” she says, holding it out for me to take. “If anything sticks out to you, anything out of the ordinary, give me a call, will you?”

I answer with a nod and study it. Two phone numbers and an email address.

“You think of anything, you call me. Hey. Hey.” I look up. “Call me. Understand?”

I nod again.

Glover gets to the door, and I wait until the last second. “Actually. Officer Glover? There was one weird thing about that day...now that I’m thinking about it.”

Her face lights up a bit. “And what was that?”

I hate that it’s come to this. I hate what I have to do. I really do. But I have no other choice. I can’t let her leave like this. She doesn’t believe me. She’ll talk to that other detective and he won’t believe me, either.

I do what I have to do.

“When I got to the building to see Nate, my friend Jared was outside hailing a cab. He said he was just in the neighborhood for a meeting, but...well, a meeting implies he’s going to work, and between you and me, he’s really not the working type.”

Glover moves in closer, a slight tilt to her head. “What are you saying, Ms. Van Doren?”

“He’s super techy too.”

She frowns. “Techy? In what way?”

“He borrows his father’s cars all the time when he wants to go out, you know, to impress the guys he dates. The Rolls. The Bentley. His dad is still bitter about him totaling the Benz and won’t let Jared borrow any of his cars, so Jared deletes the footage from their home security system on his phone somehow.” I pause for the briefest moment. “He’s never gotten caught.”

“Are you saying Jared might have deleted the security footage?”

I hold my breath for a moment. “Oh, my God. His dad’s bank is going under...he’s been complaining about not having money...and he knew about my father’s will. I tell him everything.”

Glover steps closer, scribbling something on her notepad now. “Now you’re insinuating that Jared could’ve killed your father so he could get your inheritance money?”

I grip onto a chair by the door and slump into it. “I can’t believe this. He’s been using me this whole time. He got rid of the footage so Brandi wouldn’t have an alibi.”

“Ms. Van Doren—”

“I trusted him. I brought him around my father. I...” I shake my head, concentrating hard, and then tears fall from my eyes.
