Chapters (39)
I want to scream. I can barely breathe, the anger choking me. My mind whirs into overdrive as I head back down to the basement. And then it hits me, in sections and then all at once, the pieces of a puzzle I didn’t know needed to be solved.
There was no way Taylor could have gotten the poison into the apartment that day unless...
Unless Nate knew about it.
Unless Nate left the gym and let her into our apartment.
My stomach drops.
Nate.
My head spins. And then I remember. When I first told him that Taylor was planning to murder her father, he wasn’t shocked. He wasn’t the least bit surprised. It was as if he’d known all along.
No. He couldn’t have. That’s stupid. Insane. Not Nate. Not—
I don’t know what to think.
He was the only one besides me who had access to those pictures that were attached to those emails. I sent them to him. Only him. Taylor couldn’t have gotten her hands on them if he hadn’t given them to her.
I let that go. Try to think of some other way to explain this. Nothing comes.
Nothing.
I thought today was a win, but now I realize I’ve been playing the wrong game. I feel so off balance, like I’ve looked right at a crosswalk when really, I should have looked left. This whole time I’ve been so focused on Taylor, trying to figure out how the hell she pulled all this off, when the answer has been right in my face all along, and now it seems impossible that I haven’t noticed until now.
I pace in circles, the room moving on an invisible axis. I grip onto the edge of the couch to steady myself and another realization hits. My stomach turns. Nate could have gotten into my email account at any time. He has my password. He has all my passwords, just like I have all of his.
And to think he tried to turn this around on me, saying I was the only one who could have sent those photos when he—this whole time—
He lied about his relationship with Taylor. He’s been lying to me for I don’t know how long. Asking me to that party...setting me up with Taylor’s father...
He’s planned this all from the beginning.
