Chapters (39)
I glance up at them, but only for a second, just to gauge their reactions, and heavy tears drop from my eyes, streaking more mascara down my face.
Both officers wait me out, never taking their eyes off me.
I sniff hard and cough so I don’t choke on my own saliva. “It’s like it’s my fault,” I say, sinking deeper in my chair like some inexplicable force from within is dragging me closer to hell. The words sound like I’m speaking through water.
Bierman gives me a sympathetic look, his eyes softening just a bit. “Ms. Van Doren, no one thinks it was your fault. This was clearly a premeditated situation.” His tone is friendly. If he thinks I’m lying, he doesn’t show it.
“Our guys found residue on all of the other glasses,” Glover says. “It appears as if someone laced them all. So whoever it was seems to have been inside the office before your father arrived home last night.”
“Or they were able to slip into his office while he was here,” Bierman clarifies.
I’m already shaking my head. “Dad never let anyone else in the office. It’s his...was his sacred space.”
Bierman studies me. “We found a...a pair of underwear that his fiancée...” He trails off as he glances down at his own blank notepad and struggles. Then he flicks a glance toward the female cop.
“Izzy,” she says without consulting her notes.
He nods. “Right. Izzy identified as hers lying near his desk.”
Of course that asshole couldn’t go one night without touching her.
“We spoke to her earlier,” Glover says. “She confirmed there was no one else in the house at the time. The entire staff had gone home for the day. She was alone with him before he had his drink.”
“She didn’t do it,” I blurt out, a little too quickly.
They exchange a glance. Glover flashes her partner a triumphant look, which says I told you so louder than her words probably could.
Bierman returns his gaze to me and it’s clear they are not on the same page. His eyes are much less probing, much less skeptical. “Ms. Van Doren, you say that with such conviction. Izzy was the only one here at the time of the incident.” He pauses and raises a thick brow. “Do you know something we don’t?”
He holds my gaze. I refuse to blink or look away.
We’ve already discussed my alibi. I spent the night at Jared’s; so did Mei. At this stage in their investigation, they have every reason to suspect it must have been Izzy, especially with no evidence incriminating either one of us. She was the one to make the 911 call. She was the last one to see him alive.
