“He hasn’t said, and I don’t want to push it right now. I know he’s not promising me the world, but he makes me feel special, which is weird, because it’s not like he’s spouting sonnets. The man withholds words and emotions like he has a limited supply. I don’t know how to explain it, but when we’re together, whether we’re eating breakfast—which he cooks, by the way—or I’m in his arms, I feel safe and happy, and the way he looks at me is…” She sighed, trying to find the right words.

“Like you’re his next meal. We’ve all seen it.”

Tracey laughed. “Yes, but it’s different now. He still looks at me like he wants to tear my clothes off, and butterflies are permanently nesting in my belly, but it’s like he’s seeing more of me. Or maybe like he’s seeing me for the first time or something. I don’t know how to explain it, but we have a connection that feels good, and even if it takes a while to really get to know all of him, that’s okay. I want to see how this plays out.”

“Oh, Trace. I’m so happy for you.”

“Me too.”

“So tell me, what’s the clubhouse like inside? Are there pictures of naked women everywhere?”

Tracey laughed. “In some of the other bedrooms, I’m sure there are, but thankfully not in Diesel’s. He’s a neat freak, too. His room is spotless, clothes folded perfectly. I was shocked. But the clubhouse is like a giant man cave with pool tables and dartboards. It smells like guys and leather, kind of like the bar, but different. The fridge is packed with beer, but Diesel uses one shelf for his groceries, and those items are perfectly organized. He puts me to shame, that’s for sure.” A knock sounded at the door, sending those butterflies into a flurry. “I have to run. He just got here. We’re going for a motorcycle ride.”

“He’s formally claiming you to the world as his woman. That’s a huge deal.”

“What?”

“That’s what it means when you ride on the back of his bike. You’re his old lady.”

“I’m twenty-six. I’m not anyone’s old lady. But I am his girlfriend.” A little thrill raced through her. “So weird, right?”

“Weird and wonderful. Does he know you’re helping me at the bridal expo in a few weeks? Because if he thinks he’s going to monopolize all of your time, I’ll have to give him a stern talking-to.”

Tracey laughed. “I haven’t mentioned it, but I will.”

“Thanks! Go. Be safe. Wear your helmet and use condoms.”

“Yes, Mom.”
