- Meet Melissa
“We’re tossing around some ideas,” Bullet said. “What’re you thinking?”
“That you can’t hire a pussy. Someone’s got to keep the girls safe.”
“We’re putting the word out at the meeting tonight, but I’ll fill in until we find the right person,” Bullet said. “Don’t worry, man. We’ll keep her safe.”
He shouldn’t be surprised that Bullet knew he was worried about Tracey. He had great instincts. As far as filling his position went, Diesel trusted Bullet’s and the other Dark Knights’ instincts, but short of them, other people’s were a crapshoot. “Good. I bought some spotlights for the back of the bar and the front of this place. I thought I’d hook ’em up later tonight.”
“I’m all in with the back of the bar, but you want to put spotlights on the clubhouse?” Bear asked.
Diesel finished his beer and tossed the empty bottle in the trash. “If those assholes were smarter, they’d have broken the light by the door. Having a backup plan can only help.”
“That makes sense. It’s not a bad idea,” Bear agreed. “We can run it by everyone tonight.”
“Need help installing them on the bar tonight?” Bullet asked.
“Nah. I’ve got it. Thanks.”
Bones waved them over to a table by Moon, Tex, and Court, as more Dark Knights filed into the clubhouse. Biggs headed up to the table at the front of the room with the other club officials. As a Nomad, Diesel wasn’t required to attend church, but these were the connections that mattered most, and he made a point of attending when he could out of respect for the brotherhood. Regardless of which chapter he was visiting, his fellow Dark Knights always had his back.
The meeting started, and as Biggs discussed club business, Diesel’s mind traveled across the parking lot to Tracey. He was doing the right thing by putting space between them, but that didn’t mean he’d leave her unprotected.
Biggs opened the floor to the members, and Bullet let them know about Diesel leaving and the opening for a bartender. A number of guys said they knew people who would be interested. People weren’t Dark Knights, but he had to trust that Bullet would choose wisely.
When Bullet finished, Diesel took the floor. “You all know there was trouble at the bar two nights ago. The two men who attacked Tracey Kline had outstanding warrants for assault, so they’re taken care of. I dealt with the third guy, and I’ve got eyes on him. I don’t think Tracey or her roommate is in imminent danger, but I want to set up drive-bys for their house and keep up a club presence.”
There was a murmur of agreement and nods. Biggs held up his hand, and the room quieted. “That sounds like a good idea. I assume you’ll be coordinating it?”
