- Meet Melissa
She put down the comb and walked into the bedroom with a contemplative expression. “Someday, maybe?” She grabbed a T-shirt from the chair and put it on. “To be honest, that stuff kind of scares me, and I have a lot to accomplish before I’m ready for that.”
“Why does it scare you?”
She pulled on her jeans. “Because people change. I’m not in a rush to put myself in that position.”
He should be relieved by that, but it bothered him. He took her hand, drawing her into his arms. “You think I’d change like that? That I’d ever manhandle you?”
“No. I never worry about that. But hurting someone isn’t always physical.” Worry rose in her beautiful eyes. “I know how you feel about me, but I also know there can’t be many bounty hunting jobs around here, and you’ve lived by your own rules forever. You might get restless and resent me for feeling like you have to stick around.”
His jaw tightened. “I can’t promise you I won’t get restless, but I can promise you that I won’t resent you for it. The first time I kissed you, I committed to being with only you, the same way you committed to being with only me. I made that decision because I wanted you more than I’ve ever wanted anything else, and I don’t regret it. I’m a loyal motherfucker, Trace. To you and to the club. Those bonds don’t break. But I gotta be honest with you. I don’t see myself walking down an aisle or living behind a white picket fence. I think I’ll always feel the need to hit the open road at times. How often, I can’t say. But as long as we’re together, where I go, you go.”
“And if I don’t want to leave Peaceful Harbor for long stretches of time?”
Well, hell, he hadn’t thought that far ahead. “You’re asking for a crystal ball, and I don’t have one, baby girl.” He sat on the bed and pulled her down on his lap. “Is that what you need? To have all the answers now?”
“No. I have a lot to figure out, too. Like I said, I’m not in a rush for more.”
“Then we’re cool with the way we are?”
She smiled. “Yes, I just wanted to bring it up.”
“Good. Can I help you figure anything out?”
