- About the Author
- OTHER BOOKS BY TRACI HUNTER ABRAMSON
Levi hung up and pushed the tack-room door open wider. “Come on. I’m going to take you back to the chateau.”
Cassie’s heartbeat quickened again, but she forced herself to join him in the main area of the stables. “What about Paolo?”
“Paolo, can you cover us until we get back to the chateau?”
“I’m watching you,” he said. “Keep that pretty lady of yours safe.”
“I will. Thanks.” His gun still in hand, Levi motioned her forward. “Stay on my left side.”
“Are you sure about this?”
“Yes,” Levi said. “The motion sensors haven’t gone off anywhere besides the exterior wall, but we’re taking extra precautions just in case my team missed something.”
Another false alarm. Cassie hoped that was really all it was. She drew another deep breath. “Okay. I’m ready.”
Levi opened the barn door, looked around, and once again motioned Cassie forward.
Cassie peeked outside before she left the safety of the structure. She walked at a quicker-than-normal pace down the dirt path that led to the chateau, with Levi matching her step for step.
She didn’t think about what might be hiding in the trees as they passed through a wooded area. At least, she tried not to think about it. They reached the open space on the edge of the garden, the terrace doors now fifty meters away. When they left the shade of the trees, she wasn’t sure what she disliked more, the thick woods or the open space where everyone could see her.
She noted the guards posted along the terrace, but her focus was primarily on which door was closest.
Levi led her into the one leading into the reception hall, and she breathed a sigh of relief as soon as the door closed behind her.
Levi holstered his weapon and turned her to face him. “Are you sure you’re okay?”
“I can’t say I’m a fan of these false alarms.”
“I don’t blame you.” He took her hand. “Let’s go to the security office and find out what’s going on.”
They walked upstairs, and Levi opened the door to reveal a long office, a bank of television screens on one wall, and a guard sitting at a desk facing them. Rachelle stood behind another desk. She looked up when they entered. “Levi, I hoped that was you.”
“What have you got?”
“I walked the exterior fence line personally. It looks to me like someone was trying to tunnel something underneath it.”
“The fresh dirt we saw didn’t look like it was from anything with much size. I would have mistaken it for a gopher hole had I not known better,” Levi said.
She waved at one of the monitors on the wall. “Take a look at this.”
Levi moved deeper into the room, and Cassie followed.
Rachelle played an image of the street view near where they had seen the fresh dirt. A car passed the camera and disappeared from view.
“Is that your suspect vehicle?”
“It passed the first camera but didn’t pass the next one for fifteen minutes,” Rachelle said. “The license plate was also covered in mud.”
