“I suppose I should get some sleep while I can.”
Levi escorted her out of his office and up the back stairwell.
“What is our plan for tomorrow?” Cassie asked.
“We’ll see what my security team uncovers on the Escobar family and find out what was stolen from the safe-deposit boxes.”
“How long do you think it will take to find that out?”
“I don’t know, but I think we should have more details by tomorrow afternoon,” Levi said. “I’ll try to meet you for breakfast in the morning, but if information is coming in, I may not see you until lunch.”
“It’s okay. I have plenty of work to keep myself occupied.”
Levi opened the door for her. “I’ll see you tomorrow.”
“You’ll let me know if you find anything out?” Cassie asked.
“I will.” Levi remained in the hall until she disappeared inside. He returned to his office, his loyalty torn between his oath to his country and his promise to protect the Rossi family secrets. Hoping to find a balance between the two, he called the CIA director.
“Director, I need a favor.”
“This is becoming a habit.”
Levi sat in his chair and leaned back. “Yeah. Sorry about that.”
“Don’t apologize. What can I do for you?”
“I have a lead on the bank robberies,” Levi said. “I hoped you might have a couple analysts who could do some backgrounds for me.”
“Who are we looking for?”
“A father and two sons. Jeremiah, Orson, and Rinaldo Escobar,” Levi said. “I’m sure Jeremiah passed away a long time ago, but I need to know about his sons and any children they might have had.”
“Is that it?”
Levi hesitated. He couldn’t give the source of his information, but one tidbit would help point the analysts in the right direction without betraying the confidence entrusted to him. “Have the analysts also look for ties to the Rossi family.”
“You think the robberies are connected to the assassination attempt on Princess Cassandra?”
Levi chose his words carefully. “I want to eliminate the possibility.”
“It’s already three o’clock here. I’ll talk to the chief of the Europe Division and have him get someone on this, but I doubt we’ll have much for you before this time tomorrow.”
“I’ll take any help I can get.”
“There is one more thing I need to talk to you about though,” Director Palmer said. “We have new information about King Alejandro.”
“I’m listening.”
“You’re going to want to sit down for this.”
CHAPTER 15
Cassie tossed and turned all the night, her conversation with Levi replaying through her mind. The oddity of trusting someone she had known for only three days was strange enough, but her father’s quick acceptance of him rattled her. What had King Eduard said to her dad that had caused him to invite Levi into their confidence?
By five o’clock, she gave up on sleep and headed for the shower. She let the warm water ease away the tension in her neck and shoulders, her mind opening to another uncomfortable fact.
