“Nor do I.”

Alejandro fell silent, his gaze remaining on Levi. “Either you are very good at lying, or you’re sincere about your feelings about Cassie.”

“I am good at lying, but right now, I’m being completely honest with you.”

Alejandro’s lips curved slightly before he fought against the smile. “With time, I might learn to like you.”

“I would like that very much.”

“At the risk of poking my nose into your private affairs, I have to ask, Have you bought Cassie a ring yet?”

“No. I hope to go into town and shop for one after the security enhancements are complete.”

“I believe I have another idea that might suit us both.”

“What’s that?”

Alejandro opened his desk drawer and retrieved a wooden box. He set it on the desk, opened it, and drew out a stunning diamond ring. Levi estimated the diamond in the center to be at least five times the size of the one his father had given to his mother. “This was the ring I gave my wife when I proposed. It belonged to my grandmother before her.”

“It’s stunning.”

“I believe it would mean a great deal to my daughter to have it.” Alejandro stared down at the ring before he held it up. “If I’m correct, it will mean even more to her if it is given to her by you.”

“Your Majesty, I can’t . . .”

“Of course you can.” Alejandro held out the ring. “Consider it an early wedding present.”

Levi swallowed hard. “Does that mean I have your blessing?”

“You do.” Alejandro pushed to a stand.

Levi followed suit and shook Alejandro’s outstretched hand. “Thank you.”

“Promise to keep her safe and happy.”

“I promise I will always do my very best.”

CHAPTER 48

Cassie sat across from her father and watched him move the food around on his plate. “Papa, you need to eat something. Mama always said breakfast is the most important meal of the day.”

He took a sip of juice and set his glass down. “I’ll eat something in a bit. For now, we need to discuss when we should have your coronation ceremony.”

“My choice would be in twenty or thirty years from now.”

“We both know that isn’t going to happen.” Alejandro reached out and patted her hand. “Dr. Lewis’s treatments might prolong my life for a few months, but we need to face facts. By the first of the year, you will rule whether I am still here or not.”

Cassie swallowed the tears that threatened suddenly. “I understand.”

Alejandro pushed back from the table. “I’m going to rest for a few minutes. I can only imagine tonight will be draining when your sisters get home.”

“They’re anxious to see you,” Cassie said.

“I’m anxious to see them, although I am not looking forward to letting them know the news about my health.”

“I know. It won’t be easy, but together, we’ll be here for you and each other.”

“Spoken like a true diplomat.” Alejandro leaned down and kissed her forehead. “I’ll see you later.”
