“Did you forget something?”
Levi struggled to find his voice. “Do you know you’re every bit as beautiful without makeup on as you are with it?”
Disbelief showed on her face, along with a blush. “Thank you, but I don’t think you came back to tell me that.”
“No. That was just a bonus.” Levi held up the papers in his hands. “May I come in for a minute?”
She tightened the belt at her waist and pulled the door open wider. As soon as he passed through, she closed the door again. “What’s that?”
“The list of oil companies that employ Pantheon. I need you to tell me if any of them are on your list of finalists for the oil deal in Sereno.”
Cassie took the list from him and scanned through it. Levi noticed the two times she paused, once on the first page and once on the second.
“Which ones?” Levi asked.
“Vector Oil from the United States.”
“And?”
She looked up as though surprised he knew there was more than one. “Satori Oil and Gas.”
“From Greece.”
“Yes.”
Levi considered the two options. “If the gas and oil drilling rights are the motive behind the assassination attempt, either company could be behind it. How do they rate against their competition?”
“They are in the top three. The only other company in the running is also from the US.”
“If the assassins had been successful and you hadn’t survived the attack, your father would most likely have awarded it to Satori.”
“Yes, I believe so.”
“Then that’s the one we need to concentrate on,” Levi said.
“Doesn’t it seem odd to you that a company from Greece would hire assassins from the United States?” Cassie crossed to the love seat and sat.
“Not at all.” Levi sat beside her. “If an American had killed his daughter, there’s no way your father would have awarded the drilling rights to an American company, regardless of how good the proposal was.”
“You’re right.”
“When we first talked about the proposals, you said there was a fourth company. Did you already eliminate it?”
“Yes.”
“Can you tell me which one it was?” Levi asked. “I’d like to make sure no one from that company was involved.”
“But it’s not on this list.”
“Yes, but it pays to make sure someone wasn’t hiring these mercenaries as a way to throw us on a false trail.”
Cassie’s eyebrows lifted. “You’re very thorough.”
“I try.”
“The one I eliminated is Kronos Oil.”
“What country does it operate out of?” Levi asked.
“France.”
“I’ll look into it.” He stood.
“Thanks.”
Levi crossed the room, forcing himself to walk away from the beautiful princess dressed in silk. “See you in the morning.”
She followed him to the door and leaned in to give him a good-night kiss. “Yes, you will.”

Levi scanned Captain Reyes’s report on the false alarm at the museum. Faulty sensors. Two of them. Levi wasn’t buying it. Thankfully, neither was the captain. Unfortunately, none of the employees at the museum had flagged as suspects, and the license plates Levi had photographed all belonged to someone who had had a reason to be there.
